A coin brother has asked me to attribute this 1787 Connecticut copper. I think that it is a Maris M 47-a.1 which has a rarity rating of URS 5 (9-16). Please help with a grade and attribution verification. Thanks in advance:)

Connec's are attributed by Miller #'s. Maris are NJ coppers.
I am leaving work but I'll look at it when I get home.
I've got this one at VG10.

O.K. what I think you have is a Miller M-47 a.3 (not a.1) which is listed as a high R.6. There are 15 to 16 known in all grades. Here is a link for comparison:

Kevin Vinton at Inde Et Lib Numismatists is an expert on Connecticut Copper maybe he can confirm the attribution. I'll PM you his email address.
This is a fabulous find if the attribution is correct.
As far as grade, I'll say the coin has a sharpness grade of EAC 8 net graded to EAC 6 for the corrosion. It is a well centered strike on a good planchet. The rarity makes this coin desirable in any grade.
1787 Connecticut M-47 a.3 R.6 8/6-

When it comes to Connecticut copper Kevin is The Man. It's cool that he took the time to confirm the attribution and even cooler that he got back to you right away. He's one of the good guys in this hobby.

Yeah, Vermont's are more my specialty. I still need a decent book on connecticuts. There are over 350 varieties of connecs, some being very rare to unique. Every once in awhile, a new undiscovered piece will pop up. The highest I own is a high R.5.
Yup, this one is R.6 and pretty rare. I personally would not call this a problem coin.
It is a nicer flan than often seen.
Nice acquisition!
