Was trying to organize all my smalls last night and in doing so I like to check every coin under a loupe just to get some eye time in.

I'm pretty sure this is a Machine Doubling effect. The only uncertainty for me is some of the doubling doesn't have that shelf like appearance.

Sorry for the pictures. They are not the best. They are from a point and shoot macro camera. After I immurse myself in some of the photog threads more then I will upgrade. I need to get nice close up pictures as some of you guys can achieve.

Some of the devices seemed to have been enlarged. The "E" in WE in the motto is a good example. I will take better pictures later. Just snapped a couple before work to see if I can determine machine or true. Leaning towards machine doubled.

Well, based off what I remember from the DDO info in that previous thread... I thought that since the doubling is increasing the size of the letters that would point towards DDO, as I believe if it appeared was cut off that pointed towards Machine Doubling... but that is my guess I wonder if I am getting this right since I am really new to errors. Someone will correct me, though :)

Looks like MD to me.

Also, there's only 1 listing for 1971 S DDO if you want to compare:

This is Strike Doubling aka Machine or Mechanical Doubling, Die Bounce, Chatter, etc. Strike Doubling is the preferred term of the author's of the CherryPickers' Guide To Rare Die Varieties and mine too. However, the preferred term promoted by my mentor the late Alan Herbert was Machine Doubling Damage -- which I used for many years until I read J.T. Stanton's argument against it. None of the terms are perfect in my opinion.

I do not like the use MD to designate Mechanical or Machine Doubling as this is the abbreviation that has been used for Master Die for decades and as such I avoid it like the plague. Just so that you know ...
