I came across a 1936 Canadian penny in an old collection. I read that there are only 3 dot pennies created but then some people are saying there are 5 and others are saying there could be more... This one has a dot.

What do you guys think?

Here is a pic of one of the original dot pennies. To me it looks like the dot is a little closer to the 3

Doesn't look quite right to me but it's always hard to tell from pictures and your coin looks circulated. Could also be a counterfeit or someone tried to modify a genuine 1936 to make it look like it had a dot. You'd have to run it by a TPG to get an expert opinion buyers would listen to. Odds are somebody will win the lottery. Odds are it won't be you.... :-)

note how on the original the dot is close to or almost under the 3 while on the coin posted the "dot" is closer to the 9 by a fair amount.

I kinda wish it was real though...

It looks like it could be a die chip. Almost like what happened in a 1936 dot cent in 2012 I was just reading. But why do coin albums have a spot for the 36 dot?

It looks like a discoloration or faint mark; not a "dot". There were many many fakes made in the years following the story and even more of people who take any die chip or rust spot as a "dot" no matter where it may be.

Dot is,
1) Too large
2) Too far away from the numbers

From the pictures, I cant see a dot, I see a dark stain and a white mark, which is close to the spot where the "dot" should be. if you could get a better close up shot of just that area (please crop out all the unnecessary background to let the optimizer produce the largest picture possible) and repost.

if you cannot do this then you will have to take the coin to a good coin dealer in your area to ask if its worth sending in for verification.

Regardless, without this being certified, no collector would buy it as a 1936 dot.

I agree with everyone. The position looks wrong, the size seems off and it does sound very similar to the 2012 dot penny story that xd99xd mentioned.

Here's another picture anyway.

I think I have a 36 dot penny not sure the dot is so worn it can barely be seen even under magnification but there is something visable depending on how you point the jewelers loop at it the coin is in very nice shape but has some wear on it the raised lettering took somewhat of a beating but in great readable condition I was figuring being the dot is so small is it possible the dot has worn it seems to be lined up with the three just like in the pic posted trying to find a way to photograph it to show you guys but its very difficult to show the dot and when I say small I mean smalllll like a fly s**t

There would no reason for there to be considerabet wear on the dot without the whole coin being worn down. Its probably just a small die chip or something. Pictures would also help.

When I find one, I will have a real conundrum. Whether to keep it or sell it...
