It is not a token, but rather a coin from the middle Byzantine period - specifically, a half-tetarteron of emperor Manuel I (AD 1143-1180), listed in Sear as number 1977. The shape is typical of bronze coins of the period; the hole is a later addition. For an example, click on this Wildwinds page and scroll down to the coin labelled "SB 1977". The example there is rounder and without the hole.

This is not a token. It's a Byzantine Coin of the emperor Manuel I 1143-1180. It is an half Tetarteron. The reverse is a monogram for the emperor. Reference Sear 1979. Very nice example.

Here's a little better image of the obverse.

This may be a little confusing you were given two reference numbers. There is a slight difference between monogram 57 & 58 which can be hard to see depending on the coins condition. Monogram 57 would be Sear 1977 and monogram 58 would be Sear 1979 which your coin is.

Not really, it just pays to have the right reference material.

Besides the whole put in it, it is an exceptional example for a common coin, these coins are not hard to find but in this condition they are rare and yours is very camera friendly too.
