Having purchased the Bowers' book on colonials, I've been studying some of of the pieces that I've had for years now. The Connecticut cents seem to be the most challenging series for me.

I suspect that the below piece is a Ryder 6-G or the so-called "stout Indian." I'm hoping that a few of our more astute colonial specialists may provide attribution assistance.

It looks to me to be a Ryder 6-G. Details like the arrow touching the eagles right wing and the position of the olive leaves to the left wing confirm the reverse is reverse G. The relation to the arrow and the E plus the gap between the M and the O confirm the obverse is obverse 6.
As far as grade the sharpness of this coin is at least EAC 40 but the rough surfaces and corrosion net this coin an EAC 20.
1787 Massachusetts Ryder 6-G R.4 40/20.

Celticsoul ... Thanks for confirming my thought on the variety, as well as your estimation of grade, with which I concur. I had to lighten the pics as the coin is a dark chocolate color, and photo lighting is a constant struggle for me.

I see that Stacks sold a comparably graded coin, VF-20, in 2010 for $115. It was an Eliasburg specimen, no less. Colonials have to be among the greatest bargains in the numismatic marketplace, nowadays.

Unfortunately Post Colonial collectors are few and far between. I myself am just breaking into the pre-federal issues. There is so little demand for these coins that even decidedly rare pieces can be had for a few hundred dollars. That's a shame because there really are some great varieties out there. Even in EAC circles post colonial collecting is considered a niche.

That's not a shame it's a blessing. Right now you have a chance at acquiring those "great varietes". Add just a couple hundred more collectors and watch those "decidedly rare" pieces shoot up out of reach permanently
