I can certainly understand why "P" mint marks were not placed on US coinage over the years but once they were placed routinely on larger value coins, why not the cent?

Shouldn't there be a consistency among coins in this regard?

I have a hard time seeing the difference between p and d nickels in the 80s. I like having no mint mark for philly and the d for Denver. Just makes it easier to tell the difference imo

I agree that "P" MM should be on Philly cents.

Though, since it can only mean one thing, the absence of a MM is somewhat of a MM itself...

I find "P" mintmarks unnecessary. "The absence of a mintmark is a mintmark in itself", yes, exactly. Everybody knows that, on a US coin, "no mark" means Philadelphia, & has since 1792.

Not always. West point has struck coins with no MM.

A better idea is to eliminate the cent altogether.

So has denver, and san francisco.

These are all issues of the conservative nature of human societies. The biggest problem, I think is that P and D are both so similar in letter shape, that one must really look close, most of the time, to differentiate them, darn it.

My friend mistakenly identified a 1962 nickel as being a P mint, but he probably didn't realize that the mintmark is located on the reverse since it's actually a Denver. On the other hand, I'd like to see some P mint marks on pennies because I live closer to Philly than Denver, so almost all new coins I get are P mint.

I think the West Point issue is probably part of the reason. West Point fulfills the surplus order for cents when Philly can't make them all. The mint doesn't want collectors snatching up the W cents (or the no-mint mark cents when a P is added to the Phillies).

It's what makes things interesting. The only qualm I have with no mm for Philly is when you get a mm area Greaser. But come to.think of it as I'm writing this that just even makes it more interesting! Yup I'm for leaving the status quo. However I'd like to see Regan put on the cent if it sticks around! I am a little bias though as my dad knew him.

We should have iconic emblems placed in their stead! Perhaps the Liberty Bell & a Mountain Range for the mile-high city?
