Hi all - I just purchased a 1992 silver 1 oz libertad from my local coin shop.

Now that I'm home and been doing some Googling, I'm seeing some visual inconsistencies between major sellers and hoping for someone to rationalize what I'm looking at.

Namely, my issue is with the placement of the foot of the winged woman on the face of the coin:

APMEX has the foot somewhat between the X and the I of "Mexico".
http://www.apmex.com/product/10210/...-libertad-bu

Provident has the foot squarely on top of the I.

How can this be?

For what its worth, my coin resembles that of APMEX.

The two are just different strikes and different levels of wear and damage. The one from Provident looks like a weak strike with significant wear.

Can you post a picture of yours ?

Would a weak strike cause the position of the foot to be placed differently over the word "Mexico"?

Interesting.

My favorite LCS just put a bunch of 1990's Libertads into inventory.

They are in his generics bin so I have bought several, well a tube of 20 anyway. Seemed too good to be true. It is a secondary market tube of 20 and it is 37mm not 36mm like the coin.

Your difference of the foot position got me wondering again after putting this to rest in my mind a few weeks ago.

My coins are all 1993 and not 1992. I have the foot position in the APMEX picture you posted as well. My 1993 matches the 1993 and 1992 coins on APMEX if it helps you any.

The Baileys' book on Mexican Money does mention a subtle design change to the silver 1 oz Libertads, but it describes the primary difference as cactus on obverse and lettering on reverse. There is no mention of the position of Victory's foot. Moreover, the change they mention took place in 1991 resulting in two types for 1991. Only one type is listed for 1992.

I suppose it's possible there are multiple die varieties, but I did not find any mention in the book. For what it's worth, the Baileys' plate photo of 1991 type 1has the foot over X and 1991 type 2 has the foot over the X and I (as in the APMEX photo). There are no photos of the 1992 issue.

I think the Provident picture is photoshopped...In fact, I think all of Provident's pictures are PSD...
Compare your link to the picture of the 1993 https://www.providentmetals.com/199...oz-coin.htmland 1994 https://www.providentmetals.com/199...oz-coin.html and 1995 https://www.providentmetals.com/199...oz-coin.html br /
You cannot tell me that there are 4 coins with the exact same gouge on Victory's arm, the exact same "stain" on her dress (left of "o" in the mint mark) and the exact same pitting on her foot...
