Hi everyone

I have been going through auction archives in my spare time and found this problem in terms of valuing Ancients.

The coins below $2000 you can generally find similar coins on acsearch to compare them to so you have a roundabout idea of what they are worth while high range coins above $15000 are as Sap told me valued like a piece of art (thanks Sap.)

However in between $2000 and $15000 you can't generally find similar coins that have been sold eg Phillip II Staters in EF range particularly with different characteristics to properly pin down a range. I don't deal in this range much but am looking for a particularly special coin to share with my grandad so could people here share how they go about valuing a coin in this situation?

Thanks

Sadly this is not a problem that I have. You could look at past auctions on CNG.

You need to sign up to look into Heritage archives.

What you also need in no particular order of importance is:
1.currency conversion rates
2.inflation rate history year by year
3.market history for the particular or similar coin that you are interested in, preferably across a range of auction houses around the World
4. VCOINS current for sale prices for same or similar coins. Make careful note of comparative conditions of coins here against what you are considering to buy.

Out of all of this you then make up your own weighted opinion of what a fair price would be for the coin you are interested in. Compare this price against what the coin is offered for, or what price you consider should be your maximum bid.

Also essential, it is madatory to prove authenticity and provenance. Most of the work for the second part of this will come from your price history research.

ONLY buy from a seller (auction or dealer) of the highest international reputation, if you intend to buy an ancient coin valued at $thousands.

All of the above is known as 'due diligence'.

Thanks sel I forgot about heritage archives. I have been checking acsearch and cng past sales.

Pishpash I can empathise I am on less than minimum wage (junior cause I am only 19 years old) at my local liquor store so $10000AUD is around one and a quarter years wage for me but I put every dollar of it towards my coin collection.
