What caused this ridge on both sides?

This set of dies has experienced severe die fatigue due to what was probably well over 1 million strikes up to possibly 2 million. This is typical of copper plated zinc cents. I presume your coin is copper color and not the gray it appears in your images.

BTW, I notice that the most heavily affected area of the obverse is one the left side. The dies are slightly misaligned horizontally which might have caused the left side to fatigue (deteriorate) faster than the right side.

Here is a deteriorating die from the same date with doubling on the date from the fatigue. Plating Split Dbl too.

The mint is going to lose more coins to zinc rot than to collectors, so there Numismatic Obsolescence Plan will backfire on them. SuperDave, you, I, and serious collectors everywhere will celebrate when this comes about, resulting in a more durable cent.
