Here is something I just found in pocket change. A double sided Die Crack. If you turn the coin over it is in the same place and has the same shape on the opposite side of the coin. I did not know you could have the same die crack on two sides of the coin. I guess this means both dies were cracked at the same time in the same shape. The obverse crack is above the 7 in 1997 to the rim, or 5:00 and the reverse is about 1:30 to the head of the eagle.

what I think happened there was a struck through on clash its and the item was retained on the reverse die. then the coin planchet was fed and since the item was retained into the reverse die it struck through a second time onto the coin and the obverse die having been damaged from the struck thru clash hit it simple transfered the design over into the obverse.
But then again that is my wild guess and probably wrong.

Both cracks are in areas prone to cracking on the dies but they are not in the same place, close but not quite. Here is an overlay that shows how far off they are. Hope the overlay is clear enough and hope it helps.

Wowser Kapowser. That is some nice software you have there. Could there be some die rotation offset, I wonder? You are right, I examined the coin again and there is a small difference between where the two die cracks begin on the edge of the coin.

Though there could be a slight rotation difference on your coin, I did match the orientation to a 1997 quarter I have. As for the software, I just used Photoplus 6. It is a free graphics program similar to Photshop just not as powerful. I have Photoshop CS2 but I haven't gotten around to reinstalling it since my hard drive crashed awhile back.
