Hello All, British coins are hardly my speciality and I need a few experts to give this coin a look over. It was purchased with the understanding that it was cleaned (not from a dealer, but from a friend). I only had a few rough pics to go on, but when it arrived I was on the fence on whether it has actually been cleaned. Any opinion on grade as well would certainly be appreciated. Thank you.

Very nice detail, but I agree, it has been cleaned

Maybe it's the lighting, but I think that it has been cleaned.
I have a couple of Britannia Groats, (fourpences) but this one is better than either of mine.
Grade EF (British grading), cleaned. Despite the cleaning and nicks and scratches, a desirable little coin nevertheless.
The Britannia Groat is the same diameter as the silver Threepence, but is slightly thicker, and has edge milling.

Thank you for the responses. My coin guy confirmed the obvious... It had been polished. Such a pity, it would have been a really nice coin without assistance. Will certainly keep it though.

Cleaning fazes me less than with most collectors.
For me, the extent of damage caused by cleaning is in inverse proportion to the loss of eye appeal.
I will not ignore a coin, just it has been stigmatically labelled 'cleaned'. In my mind, I will say: 'let's have a look at it'.
I have picked up quite a few bargains that others have ignored, with this strategy. However, I still have to think of 'most collectors', when making a decision to buy.

I have a fourpence of the same date, in much worse condition and with a hole drilled in it.
