Private collector just dispatched me an offer of 12,000 for coin! However, my gut is to hold this Hadrian for a few years at least? Thoughts?

Hold on to it. These are only going to increase in value as time goes on.

Depends on how attached you are to a coin that you do not have in hand yet.
If it was me and I was offered ~6500 profit 24 hours later I would be looking up registered mail and insurance prices. 6500 buys a lot of denarii. Makes you wonder why they didn't just bid you up in the auction.
Edit: It is an awesome coin by the way

I am of course puzzled as well. The last one of these sold for 10k over two years ago. Earlier in the year someone offered to pay me twice what I had paid for a Galba I had won. I suppose not everyone is as keen and diligent when it comes to all the auctions.

Every year millions of "new" dollars are printed... how many aureus are minted per year?

Holding on to it is not a bad idea. As Athalbert said, they are not making anymore. However, if I had several holes to fill in my collection I would be tempted to sell. I am trying to build the twelve Caesars set in silver and know that claudius and caligula will be expensive. I might just sell that coin to build my set, especially since such a large profit could be made. In the end you have to do what feels right.

Beautiful coin caesar. Can I ask which auction/where you bought it from? Did you go in person to buy it?

0 Yes but with the profit alone from this coin he could buy himself another equally pleasing aureus and have some change left over.
