I wanted to introduce my newest coin. I was really drawn to this coin. I especially love the reverse, where all who hold the coin in hand know that Hadrian has Trajan's seal of approval. Bonus, Hadrian has no beard and I, like all Romans of the late Republic and early Principate, never was a fan of the beard.

Hadrian. AD 117-138. AV Aureus (18.5mm, 7.31 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 117. IMP CAES TRAIAN HADRIANO OPT AVG GER DAC, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / PARTHIC DIVI TRAIAN Lambda;VG F P M TR P COS P P around, ADOPTIO in exergue, Trajan and Hadrian standing facing one another, clasping hands, each holding a volumen. RIC II 3c; Strack 2eta;; Calicó 1168 (same dies); BMCRE 5 (same dies); Biaggi -. Good VF, lightly toned, a couple shallow scratches and a small deposit on obverse. Rare.

Wow that is an amazing coin!
You certainly have good tastes my friend! This coin is full of great history! Was it used in the donatives for the legions, or a merchants tax!?
"Fruit salute" doesn't even begin to cover the awesomeness of this coin!
P.S.- The first Romans were bearded; it wasn't until Scipio Africanus, that clean shaven faces became to norm.

Fantastic coin. I love the portrait on the obverse and legend is very clear. Congrats!

Beautiful coin, Odd to see Hadrian without a beard. I can only dream of owning Roman gold. This must have set you back the price of a small car.

It is a sad day when a post about an over polished, plastic entombed, base metal coin gets over 1000 views and multiple pages of comments in a few hours, but when someone shows a rare, historically rich, and pure gold Aureus( that was struck before the new world was discovered) and gets only 3 posts and at best a hundred views. IMO.
Sad indeed :(

Augustus, which coin is that, which received the attention? This coin will not go into one of those boorish NGC cases, and will not be locked away, but on display in my case for all to see. Echizento, the last of this type was sold for 10,000 over two years ago. I paid half that, so I am very happy. I was considering a new car as my 1998 Honda Accord is almost ready, but damned if I would not rather have this incredible find. It tells a story, one older than the discovery of the new world, as Augustus pointed out. I will take that and the legacy and history behind it over a new car any day of the week. I will continue driving my 1998 Honda Accord for now.

Many modern proof coins or coins with minor flaws receive a lot more attention than any of our coins on the Ancients board( including this one). Just look at the Modern US coin threads.
For the life of me I cannot understand how a person would be in awe looking at a coin entombed in a plastic coffin.
Oh well. I would take one of these over a car anyday!

WOW!

Just a quick question: is Hadrian's bust "high relief" or is it just me? Regardless, I absolutely love how it just seems to ***POP*** off the coin.

When Trajan died he had no sons (He was homosexual), to avoid problems his wife and his sister said that he has ellected to Hadrian as new emperor in his last moment...
Of course this was a interested lie, but the first thing to do was to assure the loyalty of the Army...
with money, of course...
This coin was coined to do that...

Caesar77 I don't currently collect roman coins but that coin is one that would certainly convince me to start doing so. It is seriously beautiful it has character and is certainly magnificent you made a great trade off getting it rather than the car.

I already have an offer on the coin! My normal collection for this era is strictly denarii. I like showing the progress from Augustus to the 3rd century crisis and how the coinage really went down hill. However, this coin was such a fascinating piece, with a great story that I had to dip in and do an early Imperial gold coin.

I have no gold coins but that will soon change. Excellent piece with a wonderful back story. Excellent!
