Hello everyone!

I was doing some reading on some coin errors when I stumbled on this link:
http://www.error-ref.com/unidentifi...and-purpose/

I remembered I had a similarly damaged coin (first image on that link) and pulled it out of my container of "Interesting PMD coins" that has been sitting for a while, until today. Has this coin been cancelled or tampered with after the mint?

Thanks koinpro, that's what I had originally thought. After seeing that website I had a few doubts but still thought it was PMD. Just wanted to make sure!

Although it's plainly postmint, I do rather like the elegance of the term "cancelled coin" for it. It's definitely been cancelled.

Cancelled coins are ridged by the mint so the planchets won't be used in vending machines. Sold back as scrap and some get resold to collectors.

Ohh, I did see that was how the mint cancelled coins and wasn't able to find any more examples of the cancel shown on that link. I guess I should have paid more attention. It says the coin was canceled by the Indian mint before being struck at the U.S. mint; they must have/had a different canceling pattern.

For the record, the coin on that site and the one in Alan Herbert's book were struck in 1964 on Indian coins from the early 1940s.

A lot of fakes and purportedly genuine errors dated 1964 got out into collectors hands and are still out there.

I find it hard to believe some that are purported to be genuine really are or I have to believe they were back-door items.

Now, was India really "canceling" coins in the early 1940s? I doubt it but if they were being canceled by The Royal Mint, I'd like to see some other Indian coins that never got overstruck.

More importantly, I find no evidence that the US Mints struck coins for India. These coins may have been run over by a fork lift while lying on top of something or some other exotic form of damage before being fed into a press "for profit" but canceled before struck? A real stretch for my money.

See here for a list of foreign coins struck by United States Mints:
