Latest addition to my collection... this coin commemorates the conversion of the Rus state to Christianity in 988. The Rus state was at that stage of history centered in Kiev (modern day Ukraine). The Rus state was founded more than 1100 years ago when diverse groups of seafaring Norsemen known as 'Rus' settled in modern day Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia; giving their name to the latter two.

More information pertaining to this coin will be highly appreciated. Some sources claim the mintage of this coin is 3000, while others claim it is 10000.

The mintage according to the Central Bank of Ukraine is 10,000. Here is the link: http://www.bank.gov.ua/control/en/c...s?coin_id=96

There's other coins and medals that do commemorate the event. The 1988 3 ruble is one of them and another 5 oz medal if I recall correctly.

That said, it could be possible that if these coins were not sold, they were returned back to the mint to be melted down. So far I am not aware of this but there could be a possibility of such.
