I'm gonnah go out on a limb and say "yes", it is the 8/5. Would be worth having it certified by ICCS. But first, clear, crisp pictures would help confirm your suspicion.

I don't like it.... it looks more like a well placed hit plus I don't recall the over date looking like this(more like 2 horns) could I be wrong? definitely.

I'm by no means an expert on Canadian coinage but that flat top would be indicative of an over date.
Basing my experience on US coins of course.

it is probably not grade able and with due respect I do not believe it is the variety. coin is too far gone for condition and your pix need some sharpening. On this particular variety there are almost always a couple of markers that are not on your coin. One , there is a progressive die break in 2 spots that do not appear on your coin. First break goes from the right top bead on the crown to the rim denticle and a second larger break that goes from leaf 18 to the rim . Personally I have never seen an authenticated example with out these two die markers. That said prove us wrong and cash in that ten dollar lottery ticket. good Luck! JN

I have a small hoard (7 ICCS and 2 PCGS) and they all have the diagnostic Die-Cracks
mentioned by Pacificoin. I too, am not convinced yours is the 8 over 1st 5.

I'll try to take better pics. I have one from the orig ebay listing but not sure it's any better. Yes, I might have to have it graded if not just to settle my own curiosity.

Will try to get some photos using regular daylight. One thing that I am seeing is the 5 sitting a lot higher than the typical 5/8 with the devil's horns sticking out but I see what I think is part of the entire top part of the 5. Maybe the wear is fooling my eyes.

To be continued...

I would have to disagree that it would Not be a 8/5 if there were no die cracks. It still might very well be but not the one as recognized through the standard method of detection as used by graders or collectors.

No die cracks & the fact that the 5 doesn't seem to be well hidden squeezed onto the 8 could mean that the process was not quite set up and properly aligned. But of course this is just speculation on my part.

I am considering sending it in with the photoabove to show them what I see. Maybe that will convince them...haha But first, I have to find $700 to send in the 100 coins I have sitting here. Will get back with updates in the future.

You should send it alone to ICCS either you have something cool, the lowest graded version or it's melt

I'm afraid they'll just give a quick glance and just move along without inspecting further. They go through so many coins and have seen it all so I doubt they would be inclined to look for any difference on this one unless I specify that I'm not just looking for the grade. Maybe they are all-seeing / all-knowing and I'm jumping to conclusions...haha

You tell them what variety to look for and you pay them extra for it do you not? Or is that just for Charlton back of book varieties? Ive never sent in coins that needed the added notes.
