When I bought this coin in 2008, it was described as "Indo Greek Kushan Kanishka Ae 1/4 Unit Rare Nice". I am wondering how rare and wonderful it is? I found some similar coins today, but nothing identical to this one. It is 15 x 17 mm.

I know very little about coins - I don't even know what "Ae 1/4 Unit".
After researching it today, maybe it means a bronze coin that is 17mm or smaller?

Thanks for any clarification and evaluation.

Your coin does appear to be Kushan and might be Kanishka I, 1/4 unit coins range in size from 16-18 mm and weight from 3 to 4 1/2 grams. Unit coin does look a bit like Gobl 813, but I can't be 100%. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience in this type will be along to help. You can also check this excellent site on these and other eastern empire coins at http://coinindia.com/#

There's a similar, though well worn - and not quite identical (to yours), Kanishka I quarter unit on Zach Beasley's site: http://beastcoins.com/Kushan/Kushan.htm

Scan down the left column 'til you see this pic:

Bob L, thanks for the beastcoins site. The coin immediately above the one you pointed out has a reverse so similar to mine. It is described as Vada (Wind God). The spokes in the skirt are what I could not find in a coin, but here it is. The stance on the obverse, "stopping traffic" is one I do see often, but I have yet to find a description for it.

I am using the Quick Reply (don't see any other reply options) and I don't see an "attach photo", but the reverse I am talking about is directly above the one you posted.

Echizento, the coinindia site is great. There is a coin that makes me think I have misidentified which side is the reverse. The "stopping traffic" may not be king - may be a version of "Solar deity Mithra standing left, holding sword hilt and holding out hand in blessing, radiate nimbus around head, Bactrian legend right: MEIPO, tamgha at left Göbl 79. The nose, lips, and chin certainly look the same.

The descriptions I found "fire radiating from head" and "fire radiating from shoulders" explain some of the design. Here it is 1:05 and I haven't had breakfast. So fascinating, the search.

Found the upload when I edited this.
