I just won this coin on ebay Spain for about $16 (shipping included). The photos are the seller's,so sorry about the fuzziness.

I'm a Lutheran minister and love finding coins with early Christian symbols on them. The Arles mint offers the best selection for my budget. I hope that the cleaning marks are only on the patina and didn't damage the coin's surface.

I now await its arrival.

My parents took in 3 siblings as foster children when I was 6ish. We were their only foster home and they where all adopted 5 years later my a Lutheran minister and her husband. Coming from an Anglican background I was shocked to hear of a woman minister.

Anyways I have just started reading up on the Byzantine empire for the fun of it. You say the Arles mint offers the best selection for your price rang? I guess they pumped out alot of coins then. CAre to tell me how you can tell it is from that mint ad does that PX thing hold any special meaning?

The Chi/Rho symbol, or the XP, are the first two letters of Christ in Greek - XPICTOC - or "Christos".

The Arles mint used the Chi/Rho as a field symbol on a number of different issues in the 330s AD, late in the reign of Constantine the Great.

As far as I know they appear on the Constantinopolis commemoratives, the VRBS ROMA commemoratives and on some GLORIA EXERCITVS two soldiers AE-3/4s.

At this time the Arles mint used CONST as the mint mark with the officinae letter going before the mint mark. I believe Constantine had renamed the city after one of his sons at the time, but don't hold me to that.

I think that the patina is not damaged, they tried to clean the sand over the patina (a very poor job).
Probably the coin is untouched by the "cleaner" tool...

Cheers! That is a nice coin; you can never go wrong with a Urbs Roma or Constantinopolis commemorative.

I agree that damage appears minimal. Possibly a scratch mark on a high point or two but they should be barely noticeable once the fields are cleaned up.

I recommend a bath in acetone for one day to remove oils, followed by distilled water for many days. The coin is small so using a soft brush on it will be challenging. I suggest rubbing lightly with the tip of a bamboo skewer. It wont scratch and you can get into the tight spots better.
