I ran across a 1956 Wheat cent that has been plated with a silver- or steel-colored something, probably intending it to resemble the 1943 steel cent. There's a little damage to the coin, through which the underlying copper shows. Maybe the damage was intentional to reveal the plating.

Anybody run across silver-color cent plating? Funny.

Quite common, actually - that was a typical science class project of the day. Sometimes mercury ( ) and sometimes electroplating. We see them pretty often.

OR you may have found a very rare. all Silver Cent.
Maybe even Platinum.
Not uncommon at all for people to plate coins. My favorite is the Copper Plated 1943 Cents. At one time people thought there were no such things as a Copper 43 so kids started making them in chem labs. The 43 Cent has been plated with Copper, Tin, Zinc, Chrome and possibly many other items. Just a lot of fun for some.
There was a post some time back on this forum about all the things people do to coins. Sure was an extensive variety of things.

And then they come on here (or other forums) and ask about them. Once in a blue moon they do actually turn out to be a cent struck on a dime planchet but better than 99.999% of them turn out to be just a plated cent.

You do no know until you ask.

We have all found something that turned out to be nothing. It is all in how you handle the (bad) news that matters.
