Hello everyone, here is a link to an auction on ebay for a "1776 American Liberty W M -TREE coin" as the seller describes it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1776-Americ...321754407592?

Here are photos:

Now, this coin does not have "COPY" stamped on it anywhere (I have asked the seller to check the rims), and I am awaiting a response as to how much it weighs. According to Walter Breen, a genuine piece has a weight of 79.5 grains, or 5.15 grams.

Not that I am holding out much hope that it is authentic (it probably is not), but it would be more than cool if it actually is.

Any opinions?

A lot of these were made sometime in the 1960s but were meant as copies. They predate the law requiring that they be marked COPY.
I've seen another come up for discussion here on the forum several months ago.

It looks way too much like the copy I had as a kid. I think I got mine at Strawberry Banks near Portsmouth in the early 1970's.

There are literally thousands of these copies out there, and as mentioned made before the HPA was passed in 1973. As such they don't have to be marked COPY. I'm sure a lot of people get taken for a lot of money on these every year. That was one of the reasons the HPA was passed.
