I'm looking for advice to help me decide which to keep of these two coins from an inherited collection. How would you grade these two "duplicate" coins? I'd like to keep the "nicer" coin and I'm trying to "keep the coin, not the slab". They both recently came back from grading...I will post the grades later.

How would you grade them and which one would you keep? (The top coin is crustier and has a rose gold color, bottom coin has more luster and a champagne color.)

The pics were taken in the same lighting condition...the coins clearly have a different color tone to them. Thanks for the help!

I'd say the bottom one... You can sell me the one you don't want for 2x face value ($20)!

Top one I like the color better, but the bottom one has a nicer strike and less scratches and distracting marks on it. I'd go with the bottom coin overall

Of the two, I want the 1894. All other things being equal, the patina wins every time. It helps distract from the skritches on the coin. The 1897 is probably the superior grade, though.

This is a hard choice. I'll go with the top one because I like the colour on that one better.

There's a lot of marks on each one. Judging by the marks, I would say the 1894 is the nicer coin and the one I would keep. Did they both get the same grade?

I prefer the deeper colors of the top coin.

#1 has better color but #2 has a killer reverse. I'd take #2 in a close race.

#1: MS62
#2: MS63

Good call! They both graded NGC MS63. I was leaning a bit toward the 1894 myself but wanted to get some feedback. Seems like there is a mix of opinions on this comparison.

Both coins have old photogrades that I have kept. The 1894 has an old ANACS photo cert with grade MS 60/60, and the 1897 has an old USGCS photo cert with grade MS 63/63. I take this to be a small point in favor of the 1894, since the old ANACS certs seem to be more historically interesting if I'm not mistaken.
