I'm not posting images of this one because I know it's one of a limited number of proofs from 1997. It's not the commemorative edition with the case and certificate, just the coin in the same capsule.

When I bought it, it wasn't labeled as a proof, and so I asked the vendor, who runs a coin shop in the NE of the US. He claimed it was. I then took it to a number of shops in the Kansas City Metro and everyone it's a proof with a nice DCAM or Ultra DCAM (depending on who I ask). The thing is flawless, and based on a few graded examples I've seen from similar years with low mintages, I'm fairly confident that it would grade out to a PR69-PR70 according to PGCS standards. I've found one other for sale through MA Shops, and it looks like it's in worse shape, but that could also just be markings on the capsule.

What I'm wondering is whether it makes more sense to simply leave it in the original capsule, or send it off to be graded by PGCS, NGC or some other reputable service. The dealers I've spoken to have advised against it. I've had it for a few years, and was thinking about selling it, but when I've asked dealers here to make an offer, they balk because they've not seen this coin before and doubt they can sell it. I know I can find buyers if I look in the right places. That's not a big issue. And the fact shops around here haven't seen this coin isn't really all that surprising, since there are only 1440 of them scattered around the globe.

Given what I've said I KNOW about the coin, if you were in my place, what would you do? IS it better to have it graded or leave it as is? I know for sure I'm going to just sit on it for a while either way until the price of gold is a bit higher. I'm mainly wondering if by grading it I might attract more potential buyers who might be skeptical because this isn't a coin they've perhaps seen before. I'm not in any hurry or anything, but since I mainly just buy and hold, I'm wondering now what steps are better to take for when I start selling off some coins in the future. Right now, I have more pressing matters like buying more coins. :) Thanks!
