From a recent German Notgeld collection I purchased, anyone know anything about this piece? Could not find anything in my references on this token? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Notgeld in 1909? That's even before WWI. At this time Germany was alright, if I can reall history correctly. Can it be 3 Marks worth of gold?

I'm not sure what it is, frankly... There was some other odd exonumia in this collection, piece is brass
My best speculation would perhaps be some type of tax token? The odd shape and the high 'kontrolnummer' is puzzling...

The serial number suggests a large quantity were made, and the hole would suggest usage where their being carried by being strung would be common, a more primitive way of carrying cash that might place it in such as the German African Colonies or New Guinea (under German ontrol at this time). Also seems unlikely to be official issue at all, but perhaps company money of some sort.

Lucky, interesting thoughts on it being used in a colony... searches still did not lead anywhere...
Petrus. interesting thought on it being a dog tag, but I have seen a couple of other German 'dog tags' and none had a denomination noted on it, plus in 1909 I would think 3 Marks would be quite a sum to register a dog...
The high serial number makes me think I should be able to find information on it, but still stumped...

Well as no one else has mentioned this, my first thought is it is a tool crib marker.
I think 3 Mark is the value of the tool (it is not pluaral as one would say 'That is a 3 dollar tool'. Not a three Dollars tool)
The number in the middle corospondes to the number on the tool (The number on the tag and the tool are matched and noted in a log)
1909 may not be a date but a number signifying a plant number, or a department number, or an employee number.
If it were a 1909 dog tag I would presume it would have the city name on it.

Quote: Could be toll pass for a bridge or gate, or a street car pass ? I think the date would be a bit early for a toll pass, the street car or tram pass is an interesting idea, although I would think that there would be some type of marking relating to 'Strassenbahn' somewhere on it... Quote: Well as no one else has mentioned this, my first thought is it is a tool crib marker Another interesting suggestion, but I though tool checks were primarily an American thing? That would explain the seeming high number...
