I'm trying to learn what NOT to do where nickel is concerned. This certainly isn't the result of acid/pickling solution, but is it natural toning? Has anyone seen this rainbow look on the buffalo 5c before? Or would it grade the dreaded "altered color" on a slab?

edit: so in the field, on both ob/rev, I see little "holes" near where it meets the rim? true? that would have resulted in/from an acid dip of some sort? Is this a problem coin?

Looks unc to me and a nice strike, or fresh dies at that. The horn looks rounded, which is a good thing. Not sure about the toning though. Did someone AT to hide a dip? Will wait for the experts.
Rest in Peace

I'd say real, I've seen this type of toning on a PCGS graded Buff.

Looks all OK to me, but I don't know enough about these to make good comment on surface roughness.

Definitely a VLDS witch explains the graininess. Or someone soaked it in acid a little to bring out some extra details then added toning to hide it.

Is that why such a grainy porous looking surface on the obverse? The acid ate away at it?

Very late die state, it happens when the die is very close to the end of its life.

So let me ask a stupid question, how do you get a round horn on a VLDS? Maybe the horn is flatter than it appears, or I'm not seeing it correctly.
