Yes no doubt about the late die stage. I think the ridges might be from excessive die wear due to horizontally misaligned dies.

Perhaps the worst year for Die Deterioration but here is a very extreme example on the reverse of a 1980-D Jefferson nickel. Coin submitted by Gary Kelly of MI May 2005.
