I realize it's in terrible condition but I'm still hoping there's enough left to help someone ID it, It looks brass and I think the date is 1722 any help will be appreciated. There are loads of replicas of this type, both in brass and bronze (I've got both replicas, but no real one). The portrait of George doesn't look obviouly fake to me. To determine whether it's a real one or not - weigh it. A real guinea is made out of gold, but I can't recall its proper weight. I think the date is 1790s, rather than 1720s. The legends from the original royal coin are often altered in these tokens, often to the maker's name or an advertising slogan, which makes for hundreds of collectible varieties. On your token, the reverse legend reads B.BROS.REX.F.D.CLXX.HOCKLEY.B.I.R.M, for Bancroft Bros.,170 (CLXX) Hockley Hill, Birmingham. Philadelphians response seems to be dead on and I can now see that it's more like 1790 then 1722. This seemed so worn I never included the weight but it weighs only 3.1 grams and the dia. is 24.75 mm it quite thin at .18 mm. I just noticed that the edge is serrated so I took some pictures of the edge one along with a 1898 Victorian large cent for comparison. Again my many thanks. Cheers, SIC Report this Post to the Staff
