I was looking over this 1880 Morgan and the "eye" caught MY eye. I see lamination or a die gouge near the "eye". But what is above the "eye" It is raised metal.

I'm inclined to agree. A little circulation - and the heavy brushing the coin has suffered - combined to wear some of the sharp edges off the impact.
