i know there are some of you who probably spend more on a coin than you may tell your spouse if you tell them at all, I may be guilty of this a bit myself. I'm wondering if those of you whos family really doesn't know the value, do you have a plan? I kinda do, first I showed my daughter a couple nicer ones like the 48 dollar and told her the value and to make sure mom doesn't get ripped off,,i also told my wife if you list on ebay with nice clear pictures and in the right category and they should do ok, I said it will take alot of time and effort but it would be the best return. and because my wife never looks at my coins (she could care less) lol.i wrote approx grade and value and any notes like die clash re-punched 9 or what ever on the 2x2 it just scares me to know and I'm sure this happens all the time someone dies wife has no clue of value, finds someone on kijiji and gets $200 for a lifetime collection. i plan on selling off my entire collection when I retire (if I make it to then) but just in case I feel safer knowing the little steps I am taking. how about you any plans?

Every single coin I own is recorded on a spreadsheet, along with it's value, grade and picture. The value is updated each year according to Charlton/trends. My husband has a copy of the spreadsheet both hard a soft. He also knows where the collection is located, be it in the house or bank. And he also been told as to how to proceed IF ne needs to sell it. You are taking the right steps gidjit.

Oh, and, maybe it is a good idea that you include your collection in your will. You just never know.

Mine will go into my will with specific directions and full information supplied in case the inheritor wishes to sell.

Put the business card of a dealer or two you trust in your safe deposit box or along with where ever you store your collection

My family certainly knows what to do with my coins when after I die. I had them write my Last Will and Testament for me, in a round table conference, in front of a lawyer.
My kids are joint executors, only beneficiaries, have joint Power of Attorney and are Joint Enduring Guardians, in case I go 'ga ga'. In the case of a disagreement between them, the Law firm is to act as mediator, and execise a deciding vote, but only if required.

My oldest daughter already called dibs (She's our executor so will probably win ). I got my wife involved running the ebay store so she has a much better idea now than she did a few years ago. Everything's in a database (well, will be when I finish entering it Got almost 3,500 entered so far.) with price paid, variety info, values, serial #s etc.)

I have a spreadsheet and update regularly. I put a picture, the price I paid, mintage, approx value, any varieties, Proof, BU, circ, specimen, or NCLT (COA's recorded). A link to any CCF topics the coin was noted. Zoell varieties, Cuds, die cracks, doubling, graded or not. My wife knows that it will likely be 50% of the value of the coins that a dealer will pay. Good idea on a business card of a dealer you trust.

I'm with AgHoarder! I have no one to leave my estate to anyway, and since I spent my life building my collection, it seems fitting that I go to the grave with it (also creates a pretty cool numismatic buried treasure legacy. But whatever everyone's postmortem desires are, make sure you get a legal Will prepared. Otherwise, you risk losing everything to the government.

Always an interesting topic.
Many times have I seen characters at coin shops with boxes and bags that look like the scene right out of the Scrooge movie where they are selling off his valuables before he is even cold. I have a few friends and some family members pass away that didn't have a will and it was not pretty when the pie was cut and collections sold off after what I presume to be a lifetime hobby. A good idea to make sure there is a will and educate the next in line what they are getting under the tree.
We cant blame anybody that inherits a hobby that is of no interest to them, go to any flea market and we see one man's junk turn into another's treasure. I'm sure a lot of widows wouldn't know where to start and if offered a few bucks which may seem like a good deal to them will jump at it just to be rid of whatever has been collecting dust around the house for many years. Unlike other liquid assets selling a coin collection or similar is not easy to dispose of even for those of us that have contacts and know where to go for a possible sale-- so one can only imagine the task left to others that are in the dark about this. I have decided to put aside a few for my grandkids and sell what I can while I can see the result so I don't end up like Scrooge.
