I am just looking for opinions, I personally believe it was a progressive chipping of the hub although it is commonly thought of as a strike thorugh and is listed as such in the Charlton.

one supporting idea is how could a strike through be so perfect and in the same spot on a countless number of coins?

Is that doubling on the coin or from the cello?

I never paid attention to this dot before but if its common I doubt its grease and think its more likely hub damage, maybe from maintenance or storage. Thanks for pointing it out.

Just so happens this ones also missing the dot.

I agree with Pennyman.
Even though Charlton calls it a filled die, I think the dot has broken off the master hub.
You can faintly see the location of the dot on the coin.
Also the fact that this variety is available in both PL & Business Strikes and the quantity of them available discounts any theory of a strike through or "Filled Die"
