How do you guys set white balance prior to taking pictures? I have the back of a mirror, or white paper, or 2x2 cardboad holders. I take a test shot, use the eyedropper, then apply it. But to be honest, I'm not sure if I am doing it correctly. I looked online for tutorials, but all of them are using the camera when not tethered, and I can't seem to access those menus when using the computer. So I guess I am asking the experts "What is your process to setting white balance before shooting?" Edited by gymcoachdon 05/26/2015 11:37 am

If I have to do a custom WB, I do it before tethering. Jansjos are cool with my XS under the Tungsten or Auto presets, though.

I usually use Tungsten, but if I do custom I do it while tethered. You can do it "live" by putting a grey card or whatever on top of the coin or in place of it, slightly defocusing to eliminate any local color variability, then hitting the center with the eyedropper.

White balance setting in Live Mode is only able to be changed/set when the Camera Body Mode Selector is set to a "Program" mode, IE M for Manual or Av for apperture Priority. Set Mode on camera body, M or Av In the Live View screen 1 Select "Custom" in White Balance dropdown 2 Activate WB Eye-dropper 3 Sample the white in Live View screen (One Click) Setting will be auto saved. 4 Turn off Eye-dropper {One Click).

That's a screenshot of the Canon software which comes with the camera, not a composition.

FYI I would recommend buying a color card/white balance card. Years ago I bought a couple sets from this guy http://www.ebay.com/itm/271876439518They are credit card sized, so they are always @ hand. I used it once with my tethered setup, but I find I use them constantly with the P&S as one minute I'm shooting the package as it arrived sitting on the counter under one type of light, then I'm shooting the coin in the light box under the other kind of light.
