I'm not very familiar with these and am usually scared off due to the number of fakes out there. I only have obverse pics as these aren't my coins and I would just like to see about authentication for a friend. What do you think?

It is usually best to post upright pics. Coins can look different at weird angels.

It always helps to post the reverse of the coins too in photos...But both look unusual so I am leaning towards fake.

There are two main subtypes of Trade dollar Obverses and Reverses - Type 1 and Type 2 - and although both obverses are possible for the dates indicated - the 1876 is a Type 1 and the 1877 a Type 2 Obverse - both faces are necessary to form any kind of opinion, as are square shots.

I dislike the denticulation enough to figure both are counterfeits, but there's not enough information here to be certain either way. They're both pretty dirty for the amount of apparent wear, which is another red flag as that's a deliberate method to obfuscate evidence of counterfeiting.

I'm not a hundred % on Trade dollars,but at first glance the bust looks way off and they are both fake!
