Excellent find! Did your customer spend it as a dime or what?
The dark spot might be where a loop was welded to create a pendant. Is there rim damage there? The flattened centers could have resulted from jewelry use.

Alright thanks guys, but the lady just wanted to throw it away she thought it was junk. I get a lot of foreign coins in the store, there is bank right across the street so I get the bank tellers to give me some silver dimes or quarters from time to time.

AU details. It is genuine, just a typical horrible strike. There is an edge cut at 1 o'clock on the obverse and 5 o'clock. Could be ex-jewelry.

To TypeCoin971793: its actually not an edge cut when you look at the last couple pictures you can notice that there is a foreign material on the coin. In this instance I think its tar or some-sort of hard plastic. I should have taken an edge picture to show it better. Also some people say its VF and some say its AU so there's quite a gap in between. I noticed people (on ebay) including either type 1 or type 2 of this coin how do you tell the difference? |

Since the spot is foreign material, I would use acetone (not fingernail polish remover) to attempt to remove it. Your coin is most definitely AU and could be MS. There is a TON of luster left and the hair has all the details where there was a proper strike. The type I / Type II business refers to the design of the portrait on the obverse. Yours is a Type I, minted from 1849 to 1854. Type II's were made from 1854 to 1856. Type III's were made from 1856 to 1889.

I think it is AU as well, due to the hair having a lot of detail. These coins are notorious for being poorly struck, and most of the lack of detail on the reverse is probably due to the lack of a good strike.

XF 45 details, $60 is way to low of an estimate. This would easily sell in excess of $150 on ebay. If you got it in a slab it might fetch in excess of $200 if it was XF details, if it came back AU it would bring more. |
