I'm going to be heading to a coin show in Mid June and I've got one goal. I want to pick up a 1928-P Peace dollar to complete my Peace collection of every coin and every mint mark. If I'm looking for an MS-63 down to about an AU-58 what should I expect the price range to be? This is one of those coins that have alluded me and I'm certainly not comfortable buying raw on ebay but feel better in a local coin show. There will be about 200 vendors at this event so I should have the ability to shop around a little. Thanks for your input.

Use the Heritage and/or PCGS auction archives to get a feel for what auction coins hammer at. Subtract the auctioneer's cut and the cost of slabbing to arrive at a comfortable raw "retail" value in grade. And bring cash rather than plastic. Cash speaks loudly at shows.
You're comfortable with grading and evaluating surfaces & strike quality, right? Don't be afraid to reach a bit for a nice one; if your limit is MS63 financially the "best" coin you'll find might just be an AU55-58 with excellent surfaces which is realistically worth 60-61 money.

That is good advice for me too at the ANA show in a couple of months. And I am not sure if this makes things worse in my mind but I also look at the sold ebay amounts for whatever coin I am looking at too. BU like mentioned the added benefit of buying at a show with (hopefully) reputable sellers may allow me to spend a little more. Good luck to you!

SsuperDdave, thanks, great advice. Yes I'm comfortable grading the coin so I'm not too worried about that, I'd really like to get a BU example, might be a stretch but I won't know til I get there. The show is actually in Tinley Park Illinois, they run this show 3 times a year and I try to get to each one. The one in June is my favorite and it's usually packed. This is the one I take my Dad to. Close to Father's Day so it's a great opportunity to pick something up for him and it makes for a great day of bonding. He's 83 now, so I cherish every opportunity I get to do something with him. He got me into this hobby so it's always fun to go to this show with him.

Close to uncirculated or MS60-63 range anywhere from like 400-800+ dollar according to greysheet. Give or take.

Which show is it. First it was the Quote: No the coin show in Rosemont near Chicago World Fair of Money in August. I've never been to the one in Tinley Park due to the same dealers at that one as the one in Countryside only about half the size. Just remember the larger the show, the more it cost dealers for a table so your prices of coins goes up too. Think I'll try the Tinley park one this year for some coins I just can't find.

I've see many an AU Peace dollar that had more eye appeal than an Unc piece. Buy the coin, not the holder. Be sure that any raw one you look at hasn't had an S mintmark removed. Some dealers can be fooled by that trick and may unwittingly sell a fake as such. One of the plusses about buying at a show is you can do comparison shopping and easily get second opinions. Look for dealers who use the gray sheet prices, too. Happy hunting!

The trouble with ebay as a database for results is that so much of the user base - sellers and buyers both - have no clue what they're doing. Prices don't necessarily reflect the reality of what intelligent collectors pay experienced dealers for that coin.

So very trueAt a show that size it should not be too hard to find several to choose from. Good luck!
