So I picked this up the other day: at least "part" of a 1947 mint set. I say part of one as I have no idea what was supposed to be in a green card like this. It obviously has room for two mint sets of 5 coins each; however what came in this one is all 47D coins. So what was suppose to come in this? And what of the/our third mint? San Fran?

edit: I put the nickel in there as I had a 47, but it came w/ only the two halfs, two pennies, two quarters and the one dime.

Here is your answer. There should be 3 sets 1947 P D AND S.

So I might as well bust'em out and sell/use them individually? Maybe the little green cardboard item is worth something to someone who's into these old sets?

Yeah, it's incomplete and pilfered. No longer a "set."

It is hard to tell if it is an 'original' third of a 1947 mint set. Can you post a picture of the edge of the cardboard? Also, how thick is it (measured with a caliper). I think that the 1947 cardboard is thicker than later years, but many 1947 mint sets have been made by putting 1947 coins in newer cardboards. Within each cardboard, there are two holes for each coin to show both the obverse and reverse. It looks like someone peeled the paper off the back of your holder to see the reverse sides as half the coins are flipped over.

I can tell you that the coins in the original old mint sets are quite high grade with good strikes, and usually grade well.

Unfortunately, my 1947 mint set is missing one cardboard, so please don't throw that away - PM me. The set I have was sent to a family member from the mint in 1947, but I have no idea how the one green cardboard became missing....

My local coin dealer told me with mint sets in the cardboard are usually heavily toned because they weren't sealed in plastic but with paper and air gradually toned them, only a few looked toned so I am thinking someone threw them in there to dupe someone

A 1947 Mint set should have three cardboard coin holders containing two sets of coins from each Mint. There were no half dollars from the San Francisco Mint that year so there should be two empty holes for the one for that Mint. Also, if these coins were the ones originally placed in the holders they would not be bright and shiny the sulfur in the paper cover and cardboard holder would have caused them to tone.
