Will the new slabs from PCGS be the answer we need to counterfeiters?

From the PCGS press release:

Quote:
Significant design and security features of the innovative PCGS holders include:

1. Proprietary polymer formula with embedded PCGS identifiers: Made from a new blend of crystal-clear, scratch-resistant plastic that's tested to be 99.99% chemically-inert. The chemical formula contains PCGS-specific additives that can be detected using a special handheld device. These sturdier, tamper-evident holders have no edge seam, are virtually airtight and will provide even more protection against potential environmental damage to coins.

2. Quick Response Code: A QR Code on each label conveniently links directly to the PCGS Certification Verification page at http://www.PCGS.com/cert

3. Embedded hologram with detectable additives: Additives in the embedded hologram and label will allow PCGS to determine the authenticity of the new holders.

4. New PCGS Secure™ Shield logo: The logo doubles as a security device, and contains micro-text and color shifting features.

All of which sounds wonderful if you're examining the slab in hand and you can use your handheld special polymer detector, your hologram additive detector and your microscope to read the microprinting. I don't really see how any of that really helps when all you've got to judge is a picture on ebay, or in an auction catalogue. And by the time you've got the fake slab in hand and realise its failed the tests, the counterfeiters or their local accomplices have already spent your money and disappeared.

One of the problems is not only counterfeit slabs but counterfeits opening up the existing slabs and replacing the coins. This was more difficult to detect for obvious reasons. Counterfeit slabs themselves were easier to detect. Apparently the new slabs are impossible to open without damage. Like anything else in this world, someone will eventually figure it out.

Sounds like good progress to me. Any bets on when ICCS adopts similar technology?

Haha, ICCS, if they do upgrade to hard slabs probably saved themselves a lot of trouble & money over the years letting PCGS and others take the bumps. They`ll just use a similar PCGS new model.

I can see a museum in the far off future displaying a little ol familiar baggie housed in a special room all its own with a caption; "This used to protect a $100K coin from years gone by a TPG in Canada called ICCS, now distinct and but a faded memory"
