It looks like a VLDS obverse die paired with a fresh reverse die.

You nailed it. VLDS obverse. The nickel added to the planchets does a number on the dies.

No error, VLDS stands for Very Late Die State, which means the die had been used for a long time and was worn out. Interesting, but no real added value.

VLDS is also used to describe dies that suffer from Premature Die Fatigue due to improper heat treat. The well-worn and premature get lumped together since both result in dies nearing their end.
