I picked up a nice "coin" that has received the CAC Gold Label. The holder is an earlier PCGS which is pretty scratched up. I like the older solid gaskets and older green labels. I know that if I just send it in for reholdering, the certification number will be the same and I can send it back to CAC to have the Gold Bean reapplied. Then again, if it is better (in CAC's opinion) than the grade given by PCGS at the time, is it really worth more to have it regraded/reconsidered?

I don't want to give away the series or grade, I am saving that for another GTG thread.

What do you think?

Thank you for your interest and comments!

If you could upgrade the grade, then get another gold cac. that would be amazing and rase the value a lot. I think an ms64 with a gold cac is more valuable that a ms65.

PCGS holders clean up pretty well with Slab-Renew so I'd try that before considering reholder. Without knowing the grade or series there's no way to answer any value question about an upgrade.

Impossible to give any advise without knowing the specific coin.

You need to judge if a potential one grade point jump brings more 'value' than the expense of re-holdering.

A Gold CAC or one grade higher is pretty much a wash financially. Me, I'd keep the CAC label at the lower grade. It would tend to attract an additional buyer demographic who might feel the same coin more mundane - just another in a sea of similar - at the higher grade. And there's no guarantee that PCGS would upgrade the coin anyway. Not the way they're grading these days.

I had a dream about this last night (I know, right? Dreaming about coins...again). I remember seeing a thread about high grade AU having more appeal than a low grade MS. I only have one other Gold CAC (San Diego Commem), and this would be a better fit in the "everyman" collection than a low MS.

Thanks for the feedback and I will post images a little bit later in Guess The Grade.

Whoa SsuperDdave! 22K posts! Chatty much?

An MS 65 or an MS 64 with a gold bean. It entirely depends on the coin in question . Generally speaking, amoung those in the know, the value is a wash.
It's value to other collectors? Why would you want a coin that one TPG says is one thing, but another third party says is another? My personal opinion is that people have elevated CAC to almost they "holy frail" of collecting. To me, it's just another subjective opinion, from other group of eyes. Give me an MS 65 over an MS 64 with a CAC sticker any day.
