Is Canadian Coin News the magazine to subscribe to if one wants up-to-date values (referred to as 'Trends') on Canadian coins ? What do the majority of collectors subscribe to for this information ? Thanks.

It is the "industry standard" here in Canada but personally I find it didn't keep up with the volatility in the coin market since the financial crash very well. The common recommendation is to check 2 or more of Trends, Charlton, http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php and/or completed ebay listings (and other online auctions if you like) because each source has it's own particular ability to lead you astray. So cross checking will generally get you closer to reality than a single source can.

For reasonably common items, I don't think there is a better source than completed ebay listings. For items that are more rare and may only be seen once in a period of years, completed HA and icollector auctions are a good starting point.

For printed media, I like to have the Charlton to flip through, but have let my CCN (Trends) subscription lapse as there is no real effort made to reflect true market prices.

I do not subscribe to any of the pricing publications. Everyone seems to quote (Trends Price) x (1 - XX%) as there sale price, so it tells me that the guides are not current or relevant, except for the thinly traded and/or extremely rare coins. It might be good to have a copy lying around to reference and you can apply your own discount.

For the $50-$600 priced coins, I typically look at HA/iCollector/other auctions for the upper bound and at the lower bound I look at ebay when establishing a fair price range. If it is below $50 I will aim for below or close to the coinsandcanada.com site recent ebay prices (not the table format for all grades). I don't see myself buying in the $600+ range anytime soon, so I do not have a strategy for those coins.

The coinsandcanada ebay prices seem to reflective of many current market values, though be careful of varieties, as the prices might be high and you will likely be stuck with them for a long time if you try to sell at that price. I am sure some on here will argue that they frequently realize higher prices, but I have not had too much trouble finding what I am looking for in that range.

There is also a Haxby Canadian Coin Catalogue quite similar to Charlton and updated yearly. I take an average of Haxby, Charlton, and Trends

For a quick reference I go to J & M's web site - it gives me a ball park value and I go from there

I agree with 1cent: Just search for whatever you want on ebay and check "completed listings" in an advanced search. It will tell you EXACTLY what a coin went for according to title and description for the last 3-6 months, not necessarily what you think the coin graded or what variety it actually was.
