What Does 1883 "Shield" Mean In The Shield Nickel Guides?

On some of the price guides for Shield nickels, there is "Shield" added after the 1883 date. What does this mean?

The only thing I can think of, is the fact 1883 nickels were struck with the shield design and the Liberty head and they are distinguishing between the two.

Yes, that was probably the year they started out making Shield nickels and then switched to Liberty nickels.

I guess it is just too obvious obvious that it means it is an 1883 Shield nickel not an 1883 Liberty head V nickel.
