I volunteer at a cat rescue thrift store. We got in a bunch of sports related program books. One was for the Official Olympic Souvenir Program for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Glancing through it I saw a full page ad for the US Olympic coins with an attached postcard ordering form. 1983 and 84 proof dollar was $32. Both 83 and 84 proof dollars as a set was $64. 3 coin set with $10 gold was $416. The gold coin on that order form was not available alone. Strange. $2 postage. Just thought it was interesting. Was the ad from 1983 or 1984?

Those prices are almost on par with todays issues.

Searching online it seems silver was $13.96 an once in Feb 1983 and $10.63 in March 1983.

Interesting find.
IIRC USA boycotted the 1984 Olympics due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
I guess poster above me meant 1983 or 1984.

Says copyright 1984 and says Offical Souvenir Program for the XXIIIrd Olympiad Los Angeles 1984. I thought the silver prices were high for back then, but I'd like the 3 piece set with %10 gold today for $416. I didn't pay $32 for my silver coins from those dates. Not even for the uncirculated ones. And I only have the proof and uncirculated gold with the W mint. No P,D,S sigh. I quit paying the mint's prices for coins a long time ago. Mostly, but not always, we can buy them cheaper on the secondary market later. Lose out on some tho.

Most definitely. It's always interesting to look back at how US commemorative coins have been marketed.

Thanks for taking the time to share the info!

You mean the 1980 Olympics (held in Moscow).

The Soviet Union and thirteen of the Eastern Bloc nations boycotted the 1984 Olympics as payback, although they claimed security issues as the main reason.

That's very interesting, HaroldS. Got some pics you could share? Imagine the mystified looks you'd get if you filled that out and sent that in.

And I agree with Precious Mental, thanks for being a champion for pets.

Ok. I gave up trying to load my two pictures. Says it is too big and I am too dumb to understand how to downsize them. But if anyone wants a copy of this program, there are lots on ebay for a couple dollars if you shop around. The postage will be more than the book. Just be sure to ask if the postcard insert between pages 106 and 107 is still there before bidding or buying.
I brought this one home as I list items for the store that we think might do better on ebay than in the store, but decided not to list it since they sell so cheap and the fees eat up any sale. So I'll just pay the usual store magazine price and keep it myself.
