This uniface zinc or iron piece is from the Erfurt airport, based on my limited German. My research revealed the airport was commercial until 1939, when it turned over to the Luftwaffe. Does anyone know what this piece is, or what it was used for?
While I cannot confirm or speculate about the origin and usage of the token, I can confirm what Petrus said about miners. It was a practise that a miner took the token from a board at the entrance when he went into the mine to work. When he finished his shift, he put the token back. If at the end of a shift a token was missing the officials knew something must have happened to him. In our local mine the board with tokens was called 'Death clock'.
It is still in use today, and also in other hazardous locations. But more likely at an airport it would have been an tool or equipment check as to who had the item out and in use.
