Getting close to 15 years, would have been more if not for the break during my late teens and early 20s.

So many old people yet so little knowledge. :Sigh: The coin history is more useful, I guess I can just teach others, more opportunity for me.

Actually, our members have a lot of knowledge. It is amazing how much knowledge can be amassed in a very short time with determination and the right books and teachers. I know some collectors who have been learning for only 2 years who already have more knowledge than many 10+ years collectors. It all depends upon a collector's willingness to learn. Our members are here because of their willingness to learn. Don't let the number of years fool you.

I have been collecting coins since I was 8 or so years old with my Grandfather. That would be about 31 years. I have been buying coins (ie: paying more than face value for them) for about 6 to 7 years.

It's totally amazing just how smart you are at 17 years of age. Then you grow up and the world has changed. That is as it should be, as you arent afraid of growing older, which you will if your lucky. I sincerely hope you have the learning and skill to "teach" a lot of people, and that you avail your self of this opportunity. Your work is cut out for you, so get started.

Depends on how one would define and measure "collecting" vs. "accumulating". While I've accumulated coins for more than 50 years (since I was somewhere between six and nine) and at various points over this period I've gotten serious about it (meaning I actively sought certain coins, have organized/cataloged my collection, and have sought further information from books and magazines), I have never been more active than during the past three years (i.e., upon retirement) and have invested more in this time than in the previous 50+ years combined. Put another way, I have always had since earliest memory some sort of container (cigar box, shoe box, larger cardboard box, empty portable record player case, now a Sentry vault and more boxes) to hold my coins, paper money, script, tokens, wooden nickels, and all sorts of support items (magazines, flips, PCGS boxes, latex gloves, shipping materials, yadda, yadda). Guess I've been a collector for a long time.

Hey Fred, so you were a Boy Scout and earning your Eagle in 1961. I'll bet one of the merit badges was in coin collecting.
This would make you aprox the same age as my son. He made Eagle in 1960.

Actually, Dan, I never earned Coin Collecting MB - I grew up in a very small town which didn't have a very active coin community, so there weren't any CC MB counselors around. I did earn Radio and Electricity Merit Badges, however, reflecting some of my other interests. Earning Eagle Scout was one of my life's high points. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. It's a characteristic of achievers (and over-achievers), so I can guess your son is also pretty proud of his Eagle. Agewise, I'll be 60 shortly, so I can't say I run into very many people who are old enough to be my father (who would have been 91 this year), at least who will admit to being old enough. Or even want to consider the thought of being my father..., Dad... Fred
