Black Residue From Old "Whitman" Folders

I am looking through my father's old Whitman coin folders (copyright 1940) and many of the coins have black residue from either the print on the facing pages or from the backing behind the coin holes. What is the best way to remove this? Will a simple acetone soak do the trick?
