Not sure what is going on here under the date. Any suggestions or ideas appreciated. I hope the pictures are sufficient. There is a raised ridge before dropping off under the rim of the coin.

I also feel the tops of the 98 are counterstruck to the leftof the numbers but have no confirmation of that.

This die was damaged by the obverse being horizontally misaligned and smacking into the collar die on its decent.

Below you can see how the edge of the Conde Cavaliers Mardi Gras die began to "round" and distort after repeated encounters with the collar.

It may carry a small premium as it is unusual .
I wonder if anyone would express an opinion on the posibility of there being a counterclash at the 98

Stoneman,
Here is a close-up of the face of the die I showed above in the area where the die was damaged by the collar. Notice the lines from the rim being pushed inward and being folded over on itself. This might be what is happening on your coin.

Interesting, I had thought that because the die had pounded the collar in distinctly different alignments that a counterclash was a good prospect

Ken , if you follow the link above the last 1 in the date actually has what looks like the top of the 1 positioned beside it.
Then again Bob over at coppercoins.com has fussed at me for my imagination

It's a die attrition error. Koinpro's description is correct.
Error coin writer and researcher.
