What else might have caused something like this? Pictures are kind of bad, but you can see the gist of it. I'll post better ones if it might be worth looking into. Could there be some sort of PMD that can do this?

PMD , maybe from another coin on top of it.

It's quite deep, I'll try to take a couple better ones when I get to my computer.

Could it get marked pretty deep from another coin sitting on it for a long time/under pressure?

I don't think an amount of time is a factor for the effect of pressure on metal in this case. It could even have been a piece of pipe falling on it. There are extra scratches that may have happened at the same time. PMD, but interesting PMD !
