I have an iPad air that I take pictures with. It does good job with pictures except for coins. Any advice?

Well, I would start with the search function up in the top left. LOTS of good information here on this site. I wrote a little tutorial on my site, if you can find it. But first, see if you can come up with a bit more specific questions.
Perhaps post a couple of pictures and see if you can narrow down where you feel you're having trouble. Your request it a bit too general to do anything with.
The camera on the iPad is just fine and should take some decent pictures. You'll never get quality like you will out of a professional SLR, but if you figure out how to get some decent lighting on the coin and find a set up for your iPad that can act as a bit of a tri-pod, something to stabilize it such that the coin is past the minimum focus distance, you should be able to get photographs good enough to be useful. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, that is (which you didn't really explain yet, but I'm sure you will soon.)

The mint mark is not really legible, even if I zoom out a bit.

If it has a macro feature that would make a huge difference. Without a macro feature, then the quality will likely be limited.

Well, shoot, this isn't bad! It's a great place you're starting from. If you want more definition around the mint mark, you might consider a two-light setup. Looks like you're using just one. The serious pros have a ringlight around their lens, but I make do with two directable table-lamps with similar bulbs for roughly the same color temperatures, each about 45 degrees of top center of the coin (around 10 and 2 o'clock).
See if that helps you get what you want..?

Think I figured it out. The pictures didn't have enough lighting.

Photography literally means "recording light". Lighting is almost always the issue when a photo has issues. Looks good.
