The U.S. Mint has announced that it will spend a year implementing a new requirement from Congress that instructs the motto "In God We Trust" be moved from the edge of the $1 coins to either the front or the back.
Congress has approved a consolidated spending bill, and President Bush signed it into law in just the past few days, that includes a provision for the motto to be placed on either the front or back of new coins in the series, which honor U.S. presidents and are scheduled now to run thru 2016.

Thanks, Shooter. I guess it's official now. Does anybody think this will affect the value of the first eight released?

My opinion probably isn't worth diddly squat, but I don't think it will affect the value of the first coins released. All 8 coins, in their full mintages have the motto on the edge inscription. The next run in the set won't. Simple as that.

Now, if a quarter of the mintage had been one way, then changed in the middle of production, that would definitely affect the value of the end product.

Changing the edge inscription will probably not affect the values of the Presidential dollars. If you look at the mintages, from George Washington to Jeffeson, they go down. As the series progresses the mintages are getting smaller. The Presidential dollars without "In God We Trust" on the edge are going to be far more common than the ones with the motto on the obverse.

Well there it is then! That cures the problem! Thank God (pun intended) that they figured out the problem. Once they get the phrase moved to the face of the coin, people will accept them and these dollar coins are finally going to start circulating!!
