Early penny with planchet damage. What percentage of the damage on this coin can be explained by the planchet flaw?

That's a huge retained lamination. I haven't seen it described or measured relative to the coin size before, so I don't know if it's done that way.

The rest of the coin is damage and the lamination is the only one that can be explained by a planchet flaw.

Sorry I rushed the post. What I meant to ask was how many other marks can be attributed to the planchet? I believe that the mark through the ear is from a detached piece of the planchet. I also believe the hole in the rim and missing denticals could be planchet flaws. Thanks for the interest and responses.

My guess is that the lamination caused this penny to get jammed in some sort of vending machine or parking meter which caused the damage along the rim. This may have led to the retained lamination being ripped off of the ear area. Just a possible scenario :)

The holes in the rim and missing denticles don't look like planchet flaws to me. If the planchet was flawed, there would be weakness at the same place on both sides instead of just on one side.

The mark through the ear and to the back of the neck might be a smaller lamination that peeled off.
