I have noticed that action houses will "enhance" the colors on the high end coins they are selling. Here is an example. First the "drab" picture.

Then the "enhanced" Pic.

This is the same coin. So how is this accomplished? I want to turn my gray silver into a colorful rainbow array.

Nice coin! It's all done either with different lighting or post production, using digital editing tools like Adobe Photoshop, or GIMP.

That second picture looks like what you sometimes get when you scan the coin directly -- colorful and not very sharp.

The majority of these enhancements occur after the click of the photo.

I would suggest going to http://www.gimpusers.com/ and signing up as a user to participate in forums addressing your specific questions.

Several tutorials also exist at this site and all is free similar to the GIMP software itself, which essentially processes digital photos very similar to Photoshop.

I used DPP.

Select the photo in the main window
Press Edit Image Window button
Hit 100% view for images smaller than the viewing window (like this one)
Refer to the histogram:
If the image is overall too dark, press the first tone curve assist button
If still overall too dark, press the tone curve assist + button
Adjust the Saturation to match the look of the coin, always erring on the side of less enhancement
Adjust Sharpness to taste, always erring on the side of less enhancement
Adjust the dark tones with the left slider on histogram until the darkest shadows of the coin are pushed to black
Adjust the highlight tones with right slider on histogram until the brightest highlights are pushed to saturation
