I have submitted a few rare and crudely struck coins to NGC recently, and have been very disappointed in the grades that have come back. These are coins that are very crude to begin with, and it seems NGC does not take that into consideration.

One example would be the Philippines Quarto. I first posted them here to find out what they were, and they were quickly identified and discussed. Surprisingly, NGC doesn't seem to know much about these coins. The 1821 was agreed to be AU to UNC, and the other dated at 1829 from the picture. NGC graded them both F12 and no date on the 1829. No device retrogrades were identified either, but that may be normal.

Another one is my new favorite coin, a Guyana 1/2 Real, that I never plan on selling so the grade doesn't bother me, but I think they got it wrong again. It makes me want to crack it out of the slab I just paid to put it in.

There are more, but this post is getting long. I'm just frustrated that what I see does not seem to match what they see. Submitting coins is an expensive and arduous task. Am I asking too much? Is anyone else seeing this?

I agree the 1821 and the 1/2 real are high grade coins with striking issues (Not unusual for crude coins) The second piece I think they got a little closer but I agree still undergraded, I'd call it a VF. I can't comment about the date because frankly I can't see it on the images (maybe I'm just not looking in the right place) I think NGC does a better job grading foreigns than US but they are still not that capable of judging coins that aren't struck using modern methods on nice round planchets.

I agree. I have little faith in reliable grading on very old coins that we made before more modern minting methods were used. I would be reluctant to send anything in made before 1850 for any purpose other than authentication.

I've noticed similar issues. I specialize in particular series and find that the graders are quite arbitrary with coins of Chile and Uruguay issued in the early Independence era.

A few times when I've been at a convention and asked about that, I was always "told" that mistakes are not made and they're all experts in early Uruguayan coinage.

I believe they have expertise in US Morgan dollars, $20 golds and some other commonly traded items. Certain aspects of world coinage simply require a specialist: which they may not wait for.

Due to recent experiences, unless I get eyes on for a [world] coin, I will not bid on it, despite the slab grade

High Grade Coins With Striking Issues, I wonder how many of those fall through the cracks ?
